Joshua from Batfish Aquatics is coming to KC to speak to us about turning your hobby into a business. Our meetings are free and open to the public.

Aug 13th, 1pm to 4pm
Fairview Christian Church
1800 NE 65th Street
Gladstone, MO 64118

Talk Summary:
Every dedicated aquarist has thought about it, at least once.... "What would happen if I took my hobby, and turned it into a business? Can I do this for a living? What would it be like to own and operate my own aquarium store?" In this look at the business, Joshua Wiegert, of Batfish Aquatics, takes you through the trials and tribulations of opening and owning an aquarium store -- lots and lots of tribulations. You'll learn what its like, what it takes, and some of the considerations awaiting you that you may not have imagined.

Biography:
Joshua Wiegert is a well known aquarium author and speaker, having penned the “Conservation Corner” in FAMA and later AFI for many years. More recently, he is the author of the Bottom of the Tank in Tropical Fish Hobbyist. His feature articles have been included in many magazines over the years, and he has travelled throughout the US and beyond speaking at various aquarium clubs. He is best known, however, as the owner of Batfish Aquatics and is a solid fixture at large aquarium conventions. With Batfish Aquatics, he imports and sells a large variety of unusual aquarium fishes.

Come check our new auction process. We are thinking about utilizing a new web based tool for our Fall Auction. This month we are going to do a test run in September. The website is www.mygroupauctions.com. If you are interested in buying or selling at the auction, go to the website. You will have to register with an email address. By registering, you will be able to become a seller in the auction or view all the items that have been keyed in so far (very cool feature!). There is a user guide on the site you can read once you get signed up. We will limit the number of entries to 5 items per seller so as not to make this too big of a test auction. You can keep up with news about the event on our forum. If you have questions post them on the forum or shoot us an email at auction@kcfishclub.org.

Shelby is coming to do a workshop on Coral fragging. We are bringing in ~$400 (retail) worth of coral which we will use to frag and then sell off in the mini-auction towards the end of the gathering (we end by 4pm).

Club will have some (~100) frag plugs and super glue. If you have fragging equipment please bring it. We'll have to play it by ear on how much fragging of other people's coral we will do but if you have your own gear then it'll help.

We will also do another briefing of the new auction software - register users, show how to input items and do general Q&A.

Lunch - HAAS provided! We'll start with lunch at the cafe in the back up above the trout pond and mountain with all the animal mounts on it. HAAS will buy (within reason, don't be spending $50 on lunch!)

Caldwell is the guy that runs the aquariums. He is coming in on his day off to provide some tours and explain how they maintain the aquariums, prep food and anything else you want to ask.

The tours will be limited to 6 people at a time because of space limitations. I will have accident waivers for everyone to sign prior to being allowed on the tour. I expect the tour will be somewhat short, 15-20 minutes to see everything but that's just a guess on my part.

This is not something Cabela's or the aquarium maintenance company normally offers, we got special permission so come out while it's available! All club members, ex-club members and friends of the club are welcome to come.

Bring the kids, see Cabela's, have some lunch, buy some lures and ammo and see some giant aquarium filters!
