This is a community space that a group is trying to bring in multiple small businesses, clubs, groups, people, and make it work as a collab downtown. I reached out on a FB KC Hobbyist group and Nicholas McMillan reached out with videos of his space. He said it would fit in our $100/meeting budget.

Pros: enough room for our monthly meetings, plus expansion for our plant auction or additional members, it's centrally located, its a club/community friendly space, we can reserve it out as far as we want, they are ok with having fish in the room, concrete floor, there is a small stage. There is a reception area people can walk through to get to the meeting space, the flow is pretty easy.

Cons: This is downtown, that means paid parking and traffic. There is a parking lot across the street, he thinks about $5. That means we will have to have members walk across a street to the location and pay for parking. That might be a no right there. It is also a basement location, so its a walk across the street, into the door, right to the elevator then down.

I have not been to this location but Nicholas McMillan invited us to come take a look.

Hello everyone, my name is Jeff McHenry and in 1988 I was in 8th grade and we moved to overland park into a duplex that had a concrete fishpond on the patio. I painted it, sealed it, and put goldfish in it. The pond was about 8 inches deep and about 2’x3’ and never wanted to hold water and would wake up every morning to an empty pond. Our duplex neighbor was a fish hobbyist and was nice enough to take the goldfish. For Christmas or my birthday that year I gold a 20-gallon fish tank kit from Walmart as a present. Piranhas! Two of them, Hungry and Toto were their names. Then came the 75-gallon aquarium with an Oscar and Jack Dempsey’s. Oscar would jump out of the fish tank about a foot in the air to get the fish feeder out of my hand, I thought he was so badass! Oh, and yes, feeder fish because it was the 90’s by this time. I graduated high school in Liberty Missouri in 1993 and went to college and my aquarium hobby paused and I did not have a single fish tank for years. I eventually got one 29-gallon fish tank that I would set up with a cool biotope and run the life of the fish and drain the tank and place it in storage, just to pull it out a year later and do something different. In 2009 I purchased my house, purchased a used 75-gallon tank, then took it down a few years later and resold it. Then my 50-year birthday came, maybe it was a mid-life moment, but I pulled that 29-gallon tank out of the basement and set it up, then added a 40 breeder, then added another 40, then another 40, then another 40, then another 40, then a rack with 20’s…. multi tank syndrome hit! My Aquarium Gallery Room have all high-tech tanks with CO2 and Fancy lighting, and they are all focused on aqua scaping that my Husband enjoys. I get a lot of fry and plants out of tanks in the Gallery Room tanks. Of course, the tanks always go in a different direction than I intend. I plan on making a tank for a specific fish but then it becomes a plan B grow out tank. I do like breeding fish and not just “keeping fish” even though I do have a community tank that I do not intend to breed any fish from. Do I specialize in any one fish, no… probably because I have not found that fish yet, but I recently got my first pair of Killifish, and they are kind of amazing… yup amazing at finding that little hole to jump out of the tank. Lucky rascal ended up 2 aquariums over and yes, the lid is fixed now. Anyway, Lovely Hobby. So, it Goes...

Mid Continent Public Library lets us reserve up to 3 months out. This is a problem due to having to schedule speakers about a year out. It is our cheapest option so far, my first quote from them for 25-50 people is $30. There are several locations, North Oak is the one I'm most familiar with, just north of our last location. Reservations could be a 99% non issue as long as someone is making those reservations as soon as they become available. The parking lot at North Oak is plenty large and right next to Renegade Coffee

The Roeland Park Community Center--room rates for our size group about $37/hr, several room choices, we may have met here before. Roeland Park is south of KC, about half way in between KC and OP.

The Whimm--a theater that is available for a while, $75 for 4 hrs, located on Prospect Ave btw Elma St and Smart Ave. Julian has contacts here. Parking is restricted to about 10 cars in the lot and the rest would be on street parking.

After working through an estimated budget, we need to stick to about $100/meeting, so its a tight budget. If you have any questions or ideas please post here or contact one of the officers!

I've reached out to Whim Space in KCMO, it's a few minutes east of Downtown KC. heres the address. Whim Space, 415 Prospect, Kansas City, MO 64124. Whim Space is located in the Pendleton Heights Kansas City Neighborhood.
It is a theater, so no tables, just theater style seating (subject to change is there is a performance thats rehearsing). Multiple bathrooms, AV equipment is mostly geared towards theater and not presentation but the club has its own equipment for that. Biggest drawbacks is that Parking is limited. There is a parking lot, but it's not very big, so spill over parking would have to be on the street.
Price: $75 for the day.

Concerns other officers have brought up.
-Neighborhood - concerns on safety of the neighborhood.
-Parking - Not enough parking in the parking lot, spill-over parking is on the street.

-Julian.

1.) A central and safe location is a priority. Some of us like to road trip and a few of have to road trip but those are the outliers. We need a spot that does support most people. We have had spots downtown and some have been expensive and some we have had previous incidents of crime that happened to our club members.

2.) Our scheduling preference would be the 3rd Saturday of each month.

3.) We need a space that will accommodate at least 50 people. We are easily at 40 guests most meetings.

4.) They also need to allow us to have the mini auctions, bring fish in, not have to walk a long way to bring in all of supplies, equipment, etc.
