How to post photos

Photos may not be directly uploaded to the site. This is done for two primary reasons: (1) storage quickly fills up when many photos are directly uploaded, and we'd like to keep that to a minimum and to avoid hot linking, but (2) most importantly for you is that with services like Imgur and Photobucket, your photos are saved in the event something unpleasant happens which we, of course, do not anticipate.

Two of the more popular photo sharing services are Imgur and Photobucket. Below are links to tutorials for using each of them to post photos.

How to post photos using Imgur

Feel free to use this thread to test posting photos.

I thought I'd put a little process doc on uploading photos to a forum post. Try this and let me know if it works or not for folks.

  1. Take your pic or save a photo to your desktop.
  2. Go to a pic hosting site. I use Imgur (Imgur: The magic of the Internet). It’s free and very solid.
  3. Set up your account or login to your account. Play around with the navigation of this site if you would like. It does a lot more than just hosting your photos!
  4. Click the green “Add Images” button
  5. Note: A good thing to do is select the album (Add to Album drop down) that you want to move your photo to. It helps you stay organized with lots of photos. You can always move them later.
  6. Browse the pics on your pc (or just drag them from your file manager) to create the copy of the picture file on the Imgur website.
  7. A popup screen will occur. Select the file of your photo and click open.
  8. Click on the photo you just uploaded.
  9. To the right are URL code snippets that you select by pressing the copy button. For our forum, the best is the BBCode line. Just copy and paste into your post and boom instant picture!!!

I am unable to post photos. Has there been a change since the site was updated?

Have always used Imgur Direct Link and got copy every time. I tried all other methods on the menu and got the expected error messages that they were incorrect picks. Using Direct Link, I do not get an error message, but a brief period that suggests copy coming through, then just no show.

I have used the above suggestions and placed the images I want to post on Imgur. I made certain the image sizes were the right size for forums/message boards and tried every URL code offered. None seemed to work. I'm certain I'm doing something wrong. Any suggestions?

Suzy,

Before this site was down last year for a few days for an update, I had no problems with selecting Imgur Direct Link copy option and then pasting it in the "Insert image" pick in the post header. All the photo size options available - "original", "small thumbnail", etc - worked just fine and downloaded the picture into the post. The Direct Link no longer works, and none of the other Imgur URL methods work either. Imgur could not explain what might possibly be wrong, and the site administrator cannot enlighten me. I finally figured out that I can put an Imgur image into the post by using "Insert link", but this will show only a small vignetted picture. This is a link and not a fully rendered download.

I am pleased that someone else has made the attempt and can finally confirm the problem. Imgur Direct Link is easy to do, and I suspect you are NOT doing something wrong. But there doesn't seem to be a fix. If you want to post pictures from Imgur on this site, try using "Insert link". The URL will appear in the post. The vignetted picture will show up in the Preview. Until there is a change, you won't be able to download your big beautiful photos.

If you're doing something wrong, so am I.

I use the BBCode (for message boards and forums. Our site is technically just a forum. It is the 5th option down. Maybe that clears up the confusion. Thanks Paul for your input, I finally understood what you were saying! Hope this helps a few folks.

All of the link options available on the list result in "Image cannot be loaded from passed link" including BBCode. All of the many pictures I have posted in my journal on this site (until the recent woes) have used Direct Link (second down on the list), and that is the only one that has ever worked. BBCode never worked.

Now, when I try any of these options, they all give the error message "Image cannot be loaded from passed link" EXCEPT when I attempt Direct Link. This message does not appear when Direct Link is used. There is no message - it looks like the link works and the image downloads or is trying to, then the site drops it. Direct Link worked perfectly until the site came back up after the update last year. I think Direct Link is the correct choice, and I think that the link is loading the image, but there is something preventing the image from displaying.

Just tried to post the poster for my upcoming talk at NWAAS. I'm getting the same errors and unable to post a photo that shows on the page.

Mike W. send me the pic or link in email and I can add it. It may be the browser you are using. I use IMGUR.com all the time for my photos. It's a good database for storing pics and generating the proper code to insert as a hyperlink into the post. You can call me at 913.568.4014 if you want to chat.
Mike That is the other, other Mike:)
